Since the music itself is, after all, the prime genesis of this site, I have attempted to compile a list of essential big band CDs. Only a portion are recommended without any reservation at all - the CDs were chosen primarily for their non-duplicitous contents; sound quality and packaging often times are disappointing.
Still, many leaders were virtuosos, so the music they created remains vibrant all these years later, and, in certain cases, prudent remastering has made it sound better than ever. And it may be surprising to realize that there are more authentic big band recordings available now than ever before, with many releases containing formerly rare or previously-unissued material.
