Collector's Checklists
RED NICHOLS 33s
by Music Librarian Christopher Popa

This is primarily a listing of LPs by Red Nichols and his own groups, typically called “The Five Pennies” no matter how many musicians were playing.
Because he’s mentioned on their respective covers, I have also documented LP reissues of various lesser-known groups with whom he played in the 1920s or ‘30s.
Suffice it to report that Red Nichols was, for a period during the 1940s and ‘50s, often in the orchestra accompanying such singers as Bing Crosby and Al Jolson (and less frequently, others as well) on radio broadcasts or recording sessions, but any LP issues of those are considered out of the scope of this listing. However, I chose to include one example – a 1957 Eddie Cantor album for RCA - because Red was on the full LP.
