PICK COMPACT DISC OF THE MONTH
Ozzie Nelson. “Ozzie Nelson and His Orchestra: “What a Perfect Combination,’”
Crystal Stream Audio (Aus) IDCD294. 25 recordings from 1931 to 1938, such as
Mary [recorded November 25, 1931 for Brunswick], Look What You’ve Done
[November 29, 1932, Brunswick], What’s Good for the Goose (Is Good for the
Gander) [ February 5, 1934, Vocalion], and Says My Heart [ April 6, 1938,
Bluebird]. Crystal Stream often chooses bands and songs that haven’t been overly
reissued, and they do a good job on the sound. Ozzie made many records for
those labels (especially Bluebird), so I hope that Crystal Stream will collect more
for additional volumes.
Big Band Library rating: Worth it!
